Video game adaptations for Guillermo del Toro? “Fuck no!”

The director of Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim confirms that he could have worked on a film adaptation of the mythic video game Bioshock. A short experience that would have put him off forever.

Announced in 2022, the film Bioshock, adapted from the eponymous video game trilogy, was still in the works in 2024, with Netflix involved. Since then, not much has happened.

Del Toro grows horns

Rumors had linked the project to director Guillermo Del Toro (Blade 2, Pacific Rim...) whose sensibilities fit such a work perfectly. A rumor recently confirmed by the man himself, during an interview with IGN.

I had "some phone conversations" about directing the Bioshock film, Del Toro explained, some of which ranked among "the most disastrous calls I’ve ever had." Del Toro does not go into detail about his vision for the film, but explains that it was only a potential adaptation among a series of projects mentioned during calls he described as "stormy." And when asked whether he would ever like to adapt a video game, the director answers bluntly: "Certainly not" (or "Fuck no," in the original English).

When an utopian society goes wrong

Launched in 2007 by 2K Games, the game Bioshock was a success and spawned two sequels, which were also critically acclaimed. A first-person shooter, it takes place in a ruined underwater city named Rapture, built by an utopian society that went wrong.
