OpenAI-branded smartphone in 2028?

The artificial intelligence giant could come and compete with Apple, Samsung and other smartphone giants on their own turf.
While OpenAI is ordering custom processors for its data centers, the artificial intelligence specialist is also reportedly looking to produce chips for its own smartphone. OpenAI is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm on dedicated chips. This was revealed by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of the Taiwanese firm TF International Securities, who specified that OpenAI is currently working with MediaTek and Qualcomm to create the processors that will be at the heart of the Californian company's future "AI smartphone." The device's technical specifications will be finalized by the end of 2026, or early 2027 at the latest, for large-scale production in 2028. "Power consumption, memory hierarchy management, and basic execution of small models will be key elements to consider in the processor design," explains Kuo, revealing that AI will naturally be central to this smartphone. An "Always On" device, designed for continuous environmental analysis. The device will also be "Always On," constantly listening to its environment to analyze it and assist the user. Luxshare will be OpenAI's exclusive partner for the design and manufacturing of the smartphone. It's worth noting that Luxshare is a competitor of the Taiwanese firm Foxconn, which has been heavily involved with Apple since the early days of the iPhone.
