TCL RM9L TV: RGB Mini LED Gen 4, 9000 nits and BT.2020 up to 115 inches

While TCL displays complete confidence in its Mini LED technology, the Chinese manufacturer is also offering a TV series in 2026 based on a 4th generation RGB Mini LED process: the TCL RM9L. The brand is no newcomer to this field, as the RM9L televisions utilize a mature version of its RGB Mini LED backlighting, developed over several years by its in-house engineers.

The RM9L series comprises three models: the TCL 85RM9L, TCL 98RM9L, and TCL 115RM9L, all equipped with a 4th generation RGB Mini LED backlighting system. Unlike "classic" Mini LEDs where each zone relies on a blue diode, an RGB Mini LED screen uses a triplet of RGB LEDs per zone, allowing for finer color control. At the heart of TCL's RGB Mini LED backlighting are optimized diodes called Super Condensed Micro Lenses (34 patents filed in 2026) designed to reduce Color CrossTalk (color mixing between adjacent sub-pixels). The system also relies on an UltraColor filter and an advanced color fidelity algorithm, ensuring more accurate color reproduction.

TCL RM9L TV: WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel The thickness of the TCL RM9L screens remains contained, less than 6 cm, thanks to an optimized internal architecture. TCL announces uniform light distribution with very few shadows, thanks to an optimized light guide and improved diffusion control. TCL RM9L TV: up to 5,616 zones (16,848 Colour Zones), 9,000 nits and 100% BT.2020. Regarding the specifications of the TCL RM9L TVs, 16,848 zones and a peak brightness of 9,000 nits are indicated for the 115" model, 11,520 zones and 6,000 nits for the 98" model, and 8,736 zones and 4,000 nits for the 85" model. TCL also announces 100% coverage of the BT.2020 color gamut. However, these figures include all the diodes within the RGB triplets of the screens, considering each one as an independent zone, which isn't really the case. To obtain a figure closer to the truth, these totals must be divided by three, giving 5,616 zones for the 115", 3,840 zones for the 98", and 2,912 zones for the 85".

TCL RM9L TV: HDR Dolby Vision 2, Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, HDMI 2.1 and 4.2.2 audio. Among the other notable features of the TCL RM9L TVs are a Virtually ZeroBorder screen (100% of the LCD panel is used for the image, but a metal frame is still present around the panel to reinforce the structure, see image above), a TSR AIPQ processor capable of autonomous machine learning, the new Super Resolution 2.0 video processing, HDR10+ and HDR Dolby Vision compatibility (HDR Dolby Vision 2 is planned for this summer via an update, HDR10+ Advanced is still under discussion), Dolby Atmos FlexConnect compatibility, and an LCD panel. Native 144Hz, four 2.1 144Hz inputs plus a 4.2.2 Bang & Olufsen sound system. All powered by Google TV, which will welcome Gemini this fall (updates guaranteed up to Android 17, i.e., for 3 years).
