29.12.2025 • 10h51
James Cameron's third Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ashes, has already reached an estimated worldwide total of $760.4 million. This allows the franchise to reach an unprecedented milestone in film history, surpassing $6 billion in cumulative revenue.
For its second weekend in theaters, Avatar: Fire and Ashes is on track to generate $64 million over the Friday-Sunday period (three days), a drop limited to 28% compared to its opening weekend. This decline is significantly less than the 53% drop recorded by Avatar: The Way of Water during its second weekend, which is a very positive sign for its continued box office performance. Internationally, the decline is even more limited: the film earned an additional $181.2 million outside the United States, falling by only 25% (and just 15% outside China). By the end of Sunday, the film is expected to have grossed $217.6 million in the US market and $542.7 million internationally. Zootopia 2, the biggest international success of all time for an animated film. In second place at the box office, Zootopia 2 (Disney) earned $20 million in its fifth weekend, up 35% from its fourth weekend, driven by the return of family audiences. At this point, the film has grossed $321 million in the US and $1.421 billion worldwide, the first global release of 2025 and the biggest international success of all time for a Hollywood animated film. The film A24: Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, opened in third place with $17.5 million over three days and is expected to reach $28.2 million by the end of Sunday (after a limited release last weekend). This is the second-best opening in A24 history, behind Civil War ($25.5 million). The film is scheduled for international release next year. Avatar 4 and 5 off to a great start. In fourth place, the thriller The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney, earned $15.4 million in its second weekend, dropping only 19% and bringing its domestic total to $46.4 million. In fifth place, Anaconda opened with $14.6 million and has a worldwide total of $43.7 million. Song Sung Blue opened in eighth place with $7.6 million, finishing its first week with $12 million. Beyond the numbers, the momentum confirms that the "Avatar effect" remains a major driver of attendance. Under these circumstances, it's difficult to give credence to rumors suggesting the saga is ending, especially since parts 4 and 5 have already been announced as being in development.
