LG presents the blue PHOled revolution

Following significant advances in the elusive blue PHOled emitter, LG Display will soon market the first OLED displays with phosphorescent [abc]RGB[/abc] pixels.

In August 2024, we learned that the screen manufacturer LG Display had finally succeeded in developing the blue PHOled technology that had been announced for many years. A new key step: the Korean manufacturer recently announced that the technology has been validated for large-scale production.

Blue PHOled emitter, what specification?££££

A quick technical reminder: a phosphorescent [abc]Oled[/abc] emitter (or PHOled) offers a luminous efficiency of the diode of 100% compared to 25% for the fluorescent Oled, ultimately allowing a brighter screen or lower consumption. If the red and green emitters are already of the PHOled type, the blue emitter was until now limited to fluorescence, therefore considered the "missing piece of the puzzle". In collaboration with the leading manufacturer of Oled emitters, UDC (Universal Display Corporation), which has also been working on the subject for several years, LG has therefore succeeded in its bet: the first screens with blue PHOled emitters will be presented at the SID Display Week 2025 show which will be held in San Jose, California from May 11, 2025.

Initially, this technological advance will benefit small and medium-sized screens, therefore devices such as smartphones and tablets. And while LG Display hopes that the blue PHOled emitter will extend to other screen sizes, the company has not yet specifically mentioned televisions and monitors.
