CES 24 > TCL Micro LED TV 163'' (414 cm): between €600 and €700 per inch…

If Micro LED technology is not ready to appear in a consumer television (the objective is 2023 for a 75'' model at around €7,000), all screen manufacturers are working nevertheless to its development. And costs are starting to fall…

On the TCL stand in Las Vegas a 163'' (414 cm) Micro LED diffuser is on display for demonstrative purposes. This is exactly the one that was already present at the IFA show in Berlin last September (see our IFA 23 news > TCL The Cinema Wall, 163'' (414 cm) Micro LED TV). While waiting to welcome such a television in our laboratory, we were able to speak with TCL representatives to take stock of the progress of this very promising technology.

Micro LED panel, cost price between €600 and €700 per inch

Among the information gleaned from Micro LED screens, there is one rather interesting one: the cost price per inch. While this was €1,000, or even more two or three years ago, TCL indicates that the inch of a Micro LED panel costs today, at the end of the manufacturing line, between €600 and €700. €, marketing and promotion costs aside. A reduction of 30% to 40% therefore in a few years thanks to a better controlled manufacturing process and an increasing production yield even if it still remains low. The fault lies in the always difficult industrialization concerns linked to the production rate. As soon as the latter increases, the yield drops significantly. For comparison, the cost price of a 55'' White Oled panel at the end of the manufacturing line is currently estimated at €420, or a little less than €8 per inch. As you can see, we are still far from the goal...
